When my dentist suggested that I should get a power toothbrush, he recommended the Oral-B 5000 series. After doing a bit of research, I understood why he recommended it and decided to try it out.
Even though it may seem costly, it is certainly worth the money. There is also a way to buy it at a considerable savings, which I'll mention in a few moments. One thing to remember, however, is that using this brush will help save you money on cleanings and potential dental work in the future.
My impression is that the Oral-B 5000 is a really good toothbrush. It seems well built, does a great job cleaning my teeth, and is easy to clean up.
Like the other products in Oral-B's ProfessionalCare lineup, this brush oscillates 8,800 times per minute, which amazes me. It also pulses thousands of times per minute. Between the two motions, it's much easier to get a really good brushing. That's probably one of the reasons why my teeth are looking a little whiter as well.
There are five different 'modes' that you can set the brush to: Daily Clean, Deep Clean, Sensitive, Whitening and Massage. Each setting varies in speed and strength of oscillations and pulses to presumably provide the best results that correspond to the setting you choose.
There are several different types of brush heads available, depending on your needs. The one that was included with the unit I purchased is the Floss Action head, which works well for most average cleaning.
For about a week I did have some gum sensitivity. For me this is understandable because I already had some early stage gingivitis, which is one of the reasons my dentist recommended a power toothbrush. My gums have definitely gotten healthier since I've been using it.
Also, my daughter has braces across several teeth which have been kind of problematic to brush thoroughly with a manual toothbrush. Though we had to purchase it separately, we found that the Ortho Care brush head works very well for her.
One of the things that I find helpful is the wireless SmartGuide, which you can stick on your mirror to keep track of your brushing. I like it because I tend to spend too little time brushing. Using the guide gives me a little better focus and insures I spend the right amount of time to do a good job. I think this is also a good feature if children will be using it. It displays a simple guide that indicates how long to spend on each section of their teeth and flashes a smiley face when the time is up.
If you travel very much you will also appreciate the included travel case, and the fact that the charger is compatible with voltage ranges found in other countries. (Obviously though, you will have to buy an adapter for whatever plug configuration you'll need to use while traveling).
The bottom line, is that I would recommend this toothbrush for anyone who wants healthier teeth and gums. It works for me and my family and I think it also makes a great gift for family members.
